Þórsmörk

Þórsmörk is a magnificent valley named after Þór (Thor), the god of Thunder. It’s one of Icelanders favorite places to go when they want to unwind from the daily grind.

The first stop of the day is at one of Iceland’s loveliest waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss. Here the sure-footed can walk behind the thundering cascade but be careful as the trails is narrow and a bit slippery. Extra caution is especially needed during the winter and good footwear is recommended. This is one of the most photographed places in Iceland and for good reason. During the winter, the waterfall is lit up so you can enjoy it’s magic all year round.

Then it’s on to a spectacular hidden canyon rich with unique flora, green moss and a beautiful waterfall. Depending on conditions, we will either be making a stop at Gljúfrabúi or Nauthúsagil.

Now it’s time for more action as we head to Gigjökull glacier tongue. The driver will deflate the tires for some serious jeep action, including splashing through glacier rivers, so fasten your seatbelts, keep your windows closed and experience the fun! Gígjökull is one of 2 glacier outlets from Eyjafjallajökull and the site of the infamous volcanic eruption in 2010. During the eruption millions of liters of melted ice from Eyjafjallajokull came bursting down the mountainside causing massive destructive floods on its way to the Atlantic and changed the scenery for years to come.

Our final stop is in Básar, one of the most beautiful spots in Þórsmörk where you can take a short hike around the area. It’s uniquely located between three glaciers, Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Tindafjallajökull. The ring of glaciers and mountains shield the valley from the harsh weather conditions of the Icelandic highlands, the ideal conditions for a micro-climate. The diverse flora and magnificent landscape is a must for nature lovers and meltwater from the surrounding glaciers create constantly changing rushing torrents across the valley floor.

Itinerary

Seljalandsfoss

Seljalandsfoss is a 62 metre high waterfall that is considered very picturesque. An absolute must is to walk behind the waterfall and feel the mist coming from it. It is considered one of the must-sees in South Iceland.

Gígjökull

Gígjökull is an outlet glacier that runs north into Þórsmörk from Eyjafjallajökull glacier. In front of Gígjökull was a rather large glacier lagoon that was washed away during the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull on April 14th 2010. Today it is possible to drive up to the glacier and have a look into a small ice cave.

Stakkholtsgjá

Stakkholtsgjá is located on the way into Þórsmörk. It’s a beautiful canyon, covered in moss that lies 2 km into the landscape and ends at the waterfall Bergvatnsfoss. Be prepared to get your feet slightly wet.

Básar

Básar is our stop in Þórsmörk. It is considered the most beautiful and weather protected area in Þórsmörk. Many hiking trails lie from it, including the one over Fimmvörðuháls. Many unbridged rivers are on the way and unmodified cars should not attempt to cross them.
